U20 Players Urged to Attend Fitness Tests

Fitness tests for the Eastern based players vying for a spot in the Vodafone Fiji U20 team to the Junior World Trophy in Portugal were held at the High Performance Gym in Suva today.

More than 40 players turned up and went through the fitness test which consisted of a 1.5km run, bench press and chin ups.

Vodafone Fiji U20 coach Bill Gadolo was unimpressed with the turnout.

“In the past players have always turned up only for the trials and not the fitness tests; what they need to understand is that to be considered for the trials they need to pass the fitness test first”.

“This is the reason why we are holding open trials because it is not only for the team that went to Canberra or the Vodafone Fiji U20 extended squad but also for those who know they have what it takes to represent the country in Portugal”.

Gadolo said that after their tour to Canberra there are some positions that needed to be worked on.

“After reviewing the matches that we played in Canberra, we have identified some key positions that we still need to work on”.

“All players from the team that went to Canberra including the extended squad and other local players will go through the same fitness tests and the trials.”

Based on results Gadolo says that there is still room for improvement.

“Players that didn’t make the cut the last time were advised to continue with their Daily Training Environments in preparation for these trials, I am glad that some of them have done so, but there is still room for improvement which can be worked on”.

Gadolo is urging all those that didn’t turn up for the fitness test in Suva today to attend the second tomorrow.

“I am urging all those that did not make it today, to come to the HPU gym in Sigatoka tomorrow and attend the fitness test, for you to be considered”.

He also had a message for those that will turn up for the trials.

“Players who turn up for the trials without attending the fitness tests will not be considered for selection.  There is a process in place to select the best team to represent Fiji and we want everyone to respect and adhere to these processes”.

The second fitness test will be held at the HPU Gym in Sigatoka at 10am tomorrow.
