U18 Girls Skills Clinic

The Fiji Rugby Union’s Development Unit conducted a successful three day skills clinic for the U18 girls in the Suva region last week. The clinic ended with some 7s games to test what they had learnt. It was also their first contact game for all the girls that took part.

Rugby Development Manager Sale Sorovaki was impressed with the potential displayed by these first timers in the sport.

“I am happy to see them enjoying themselves in a real game situation. I have also noticed a few players who stood out,” Sale said.

Though more attention is needed around the ruck areas only one high tackle was committed.

“This is the beginning of their rugby career and from watching their games we must spend more time with them to clarify their roles in the breakdown area.”

Apart from the breakdown, they executed well in scrums and line-outs.

Younger sister of former sevens rep Waisea Nayacalevu, Irene Vuidravuwalu scored a number of tries and was overwhelmed with the knowledge gained during the three days.

“It is new but I am grateful to be part of this where I get to learn so many things about rugby in only a few days,” Vuidravuwalu said.

“There are things you need to know which you should apply during the game to prevent injuries and to those girls out there who have reservations about playing rugby, try it, it’s enjoyable.”

Development Officer Alifereti Mocelutu ran the basic skills and Joeli Tubu explained the laws.

Another skills clinic will be held next week at St John’s College in Levuka and then Lautoka. After teaching the girls all the basics FRU will hold a trials to select a training squad for the Youth Commonwealth games in September.
