Take Road Safety Awareness into Our Schools

The Road Safety Cube is a program developed by the Marketing and Services Branch of the Total Group in Paris and is being deployed in Total companies around the world.

On Friday the 10th of April, staff of Total Fiji and the LTA, with the Vodafone Fiji Sevens team members and coach, Ben Ryan was at the Suva Methodist Primary School for the first deployment of the Road Safety Cube. Together the group taught seven Year 5 classes or approximately 300 children. In 2015, Total Fiji has an objective of teaching 2000 Year 4 and 5 students using the Road Safety Cube.

The Road Safety Cube uses fun and practical materials to help teach students about road safety. The three lessons – learn the rules of the road, move around safely, and protect yourself at all times – are taught by creating group discussion, completing activities in a student’s workbook, and group games or activities to reinforce the lessons.

Total Fiji recognises the high incidences of fatalities and serious accidents on our roads as major problem in our communities. The fact that over 250 school aged children have lost their lives on our roads in the past 25 years is an extremely unfortunate and saddening statistic. In the past five years Total Fiji has worked together with the LTA on various initiatives to improve road safety in our schools and both are extremely grateful to have the Fiji Rugby Union and the Vodafone Fiji Sevens Team come aboard for the deployment of the Road Safety Cube.

The program at Suva Methodist Primary School began at 10am and the chief guests for the event were Vodafone Fiji 7s coach, Mr. Ben Ryan, Total Fiji Ltd Managing Director, Mr. Martin McCarthy, and LTA General Manager Road Safety, Mr. Timoci Satakala with Vodafone Fiji 7s captain Osea Kolinisau, Savenaca Rawaca and Emosi Mulevoro.
