Fiji Rugby Union Reinstated to World Rugby Council Memberships
Suva, Fiji – The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is thrilled to announce that World Rugby has reinstated its membership in the World Rugby Council with immediate effect. This significant decision comes following the World Rugby Executive Board’s meeting in late July, during which they reviewed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee.
The report highlighted that the Fiji Rugby Union successfully held a Special General Meeting where members unanimously adopted a new constitution and governance structure. This marks a crucial step forward in ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective leadership within Fiji Rugby.
Mr. Peter Mazey, Chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union, expressed his enthusiasm about the reinstatement. “We are incredibly grateful for the support of World Rugby and the commitment shown by our stakeholders during this process. The adoption of our new constitution and governance framework is a testament to our dedication to moving Fiji Rugby forward. This reinstatement is not just a victory for our Union but for all our players, coaches, and fans who have stood by us during this period.”
Mr. Mazey further stated, “This development allows us to strengthen our ties within the global rugby community and to continue our mission of growing the game of rugby in Fiji. We look forward to collaborating with our fellow council members to contribute positively to the sport on both a national and international level.”
With the reinstatement, Fiji Rugby Union will now nominate its Representative to the World Rugby Council who will be required to be vetted in accordance with World Rugby Integrity Code in advance of taking his/her seat on the Council.
In a statement, World Rugby Executive Board expressed their gratitude to the Fiji Oversight Committee members, Dr Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong for their diligence and efforts in guiding the Fiji Rugby Union to a successful conclusion of the matter.
The FRU will continue to work diligently to uphold the values and standards expected by World Rugby.
