Australia Funds $14.2m for Pacific Rugby

Australia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting rugby development in the Pacific region by announcing a significant funding of $14.2 million. The contribution aims to bolster rugby initiatives across Pacific Island nations, emphasizing the growth and advancement of both men’s and women’s rugby.

Jenny Seeto, Interim Trustee of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, extended her heartfelt appreciation to the Australian Government, recognizing the transformative impact of their continued investment in Pacific rugby. She emphasized the significance of the fundingin providing opportunities for aspiring athletes, promoting diversity and  inclusivity, and fostering camaraderie across communities.

Seeto shared, “We were very honoured that the Fijian Parliamentary Delegation who was visiting the Australian Parliament at the time was able to join us for this significant announcement.”

She said, “The future is bright for young Pasifika buddying rugby players with investments like these from Australia as it will fuel dreams of our youth of becoming professional rugby players. The high-performance programs which will be run by the Academy will provide training and upskilling opportunities for the technical teams.”

Seeto stressed that Australia’s commitment to supporting Pacific rugby reflects its recognition of the sport’s profound socio-economic  and cultural significance in the region. Through strategic partnerships and collaborative efforts, Australia and Pacific Island nations are poised to further strengthen rugby’s position as a catalyst for positive change and development.

The Honourable Pat Conroy, Australia’s Minister for International Development and  the Pacific said the nation would partner with Rugby Australia in a four-year programme to strengthen Pacific Island national rugby union teams.

The partnership would include support for training and women players as well as opportunities to host major events, he said, calling Australia and the Pacific Island nations “family.”
